This is an updated version of a similar weapon on my gallery designated the M3. I never really liked the way the old design looked.

I could spend as much time describing the weapon as I did designing it, but I'll just go ahead and answer the main questions I suspect I will be getting:

Yes, 5.73x35mm is small for conventional ammunition; however, it should be more than adequate for a light assault weapon, considering that the HK G11 caseless rifle fires a 4.73x33mm round and has ballistics comparable to the M16. In 30 or 40 years, I'm sure that munitions technology will allow for smaller unconventional rounds that surpass their larger conventional counterparts.

The bolt shield on the rear of the receiver does not operate during normal firing. It opens only when the charging handle is pulled back in order to unload the weapon, eject a misfired cartridge, load the first round of a fresh magazine, or to view the chamber for inspection and cleaning.

Also, the two main reticles (i.e., not the backup red dot) shown for the ACOG are for two different models of that particular optic. The M986 CICOG, however, has selectable holographic reticles based around the black milling line etched into the glass.

saw the wip thread on CDG, the model is looking nice.

i'd be curious to see if something like that is comfortable to shoulder. that style of loading always bothered me though. i don't see whats wrong with the typical magazine well orientation. especially since i don't see what benefit this style would have to loading caseless cartridges.

um, and i wouldn't bother mentioning the caliber, except that recently i've been looking up references for the M14 and every review that pops up has someone complaining about 5.56 and saying 7.62x51 is much more satisfying. i don't know that much about caseless so that's the most i'll say.

this concept is more than one of the most impressive weapon concepts i've ever seen, it's pretty much the only impressive weapon concept i've ever seen D:

that's pretty fuckin sweet! and it's always funny how people whine and bitch about the size of ammo for a gun. well the .17 hmr and .22 are some of the deadliest calibres... the .22 is one of the most used in assassinations also. easier to sucessfully silence too. if you've ever fired a "silenced" rifle you would know that the bigger the calibre the less the silence. i fired silenced .308 and it was pretty loud, it's not like in the movies :) and if your gun actually get's made i will purchase one, no matter what the cost. it looks fuckin awesome!

My suggestion would be to go with the standard bullpup magazine configuration in 6.5 Grendel (P90 magazines have reliability issues when it comes to half empty magazines), but caseless (as in the HK G11). It is quite similar to your cartridge design above but there is no brass to expel. The propellant is the casing.

Love the design ... But, I tend to agree with the magazine feed issues. I
